In 2020, the Lodge received an Impact Grant, they expanded their outreach and work with Kids Up Head Start Program to provide more than 4,000 books to kids living in low-income households. As the COVID-19 crisis began to unfold last spring, Elks Lodges were shuttered. People were getting sick. Healthcare workers were overwhelmed. One in six Americans faced food insecurity by the end of the summer. Then, the Community Investments Program grant year opened. Elks said, “not in my community.” With CIP grants and an unwavering commitment to service, we changed the news.

The Community Investments Program debuted the Spotlight Grant in 2019-20. Every Lodge will have the opportunity to use this $2,000 grant to shine a light on two important issues facing nearly every American community—family literacy and homelessness among our nation’s veterans. Jeff Mitchell is the 2014-15 Community Investments Program Volunteer of the Year. Mitchell leads the Lodge in the use of an Impact Grant. Through the EFELT project, Elks partner with local schools to identify youth in need, and provide them with a backpack of food each Friday afternoon as they leave school.
